Background statement

Post Polio Victoria Inc. (PPV) aims to advocate for people living with polio, to enable inclusion and remove discrimination. Advocacy means to raise awareness of the requirements necessary to enable people living with polio to be full members of their communities and lobby for the necessary changes.

Post Polio Victoria’s goals are to educate government authorities, service providers, community leaders, researchers, and health professionals about the difficulties confronting people with polio and to bring about essential changes in systems and services.

Post Polio Victoria supports the principles of the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Rudd government ratified the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities 18/7/08 with a statement from Minister Shorten which read “Australia recognizes that persons with disability enjoy legal capacity on an equal basis with others in all aspects of life…. Australia recognizes that every person with disability has a right to respect for his or her physical and mental integrity on an equal basis with others.

Post Polio Victoria is not party political.

Purpose of the Advocacy Working Group (AWG)

The purpose of the AWG to make recommendations to the PPV Committee on content and approach to advocacy.

The issues that the AWG considers may be referred by the President or the PPV Committee or be generated by the AWG.

The Convenor of the AWG may make statements on advocacy issues on behalf of the PPV by agreement with the President or at the request of the PPV Committee.

The AWG may recommend to the PPV Committee that it makes public statements on matters concerning PPV members.

Structure

The AWG will be made up of some Committee of Management members and general PPV members.

Input from all Post Polio Victoria members will be welcomed.

The AWG will be accountable to the Post Polio Victoria Committee.
