October is Polio Awareness Month which was established by Polio Australia in 2010 to align with international campaigns and lead into World polio Day on 24th October. The theme, “We’re Still Here“, highlights the resilience of the post-polio community and calls for public awareness, specialised post-polio medical care, and disability support. For many polio survivors here in Australia – most of whom are now over 65 and excluded from the NDIS – the pressing issue is not eradication, but ongoing care.
